Selling a house in the winter time can be a bit trickier. Less natural light, colder days and garden’s which have most likely seen better days.

In order to entice buyers in to your home, it’s time to prepare your home. Obviously keeping it as clean and tidy as possible, clutter can shade people’s perception and stop them being able to imagine their own belongings inside the property. Below we have compiled a few tips for selling your home in the winter.

  1. Provide viewers with a bright welcome – Make sure the kerb appeal of your property meets viewer’s expectations. Why would potential viewers want to view your home if the front of your house gives an undesirable feel?  Clear garden paths and driveways – makes sure your house number or name is displayed clearly - power wash any hard surfaces – clean windows inside and out and check outside lights are working.
  2. Warm and inviting feel – If your home has an open fire or log burner make sure it is lit for viewings – turn your heating on in upstairs bedrooms and bathrooms to provide an optimum temperature. If your property benefits from underfloor heating in any rooms it is a good idea to have this on to demonstrate.
  3. Cosy ambience - Turn on any side lamps you may have throughout the house – keep curtains and blinds open to flood the room with as much natural light as possible especially on grey days.  Add throws and cushions to sofas and beds for a cosy wintertime feel.
  4. Scent – Effective for invoking positive memories and feelings. When you have a viewing why not bake a batch of scones or biscuits a few hours before or alternatively light a candle with a cinnamon or vanilla scent.
  5. Blitz your rear garden – Put away any garden furniture made of plastic or wood. If it must stay out make sure they are arranged nicely and are kept clean. Clean paths and patios and make sure your garden is looking well maintained.
